I am sharing, with consent, an important message below from one of our Neighbourhood Watch Coordinators.

Just a note to report that yesterday evening we received a text message from someone purporting to be one of our children.

They claimed to have dropped their phone down the toilet and that we would need to use a temporary number (+44**********).

Later in the evening we received a further text, this time asking if we could pay an “invoice”, for nearly £2000, otherwise extra charges would be incurred.

We text back to the effect that we would need to go into the bank the next day.

They replied that they could make the payment if they had my wife’s debit card details.

At which point we knew it was a scam, confirmed by telephoning our daughter’s usual mobile number.

We have since blocked the number and warned our son and daughter that if they ever need money urgently, they need to speak to us rather than text or email.
