NHW – Dog theft alert

28/01/2021 9788 Somerset: Dog Thefts

Dear Members,

There were two incidents where dogs were stolen during the night of Tuesday 26 January. On both occasions pure bred dogs or new-born puppies were taken from secure outside pens. One incident was in Alveston, South Gloucestershire and the other at Queen Charlton in Bath & North East Somerset. Whilst both of these were outside of our area, this does not mean it could not head our way and it is far better to be forewarned.

We want to remind all dog owners to review and increase the security of their pets wherever possible. Ensure that they are microchipped and registered, and make sure your garden is secure.

It is estimated that dog thefts have increased by 250% as the Covid restrictions have caused a huge demand for puppies across the country. Although these offences are classified as “Theft”, losing a pet in this way can cause enormous trauma and heartbreak to a family.

You can find advice on protecting your dog on many sites on the internet, one of them being:

26/01/2021 9788 Somerset: Remain alert to Vaccination Scams.

Dear Members

Again this morning, a couple of our coordinators have directed me to another potentially hazardous scam claiming to originate from the NHS offering the vaccine for Covid-19. On first impressions it looks quite genuine, until the point at which it asks for payment details.

As we all know the vaccine is completely free, the NHS will never ask for your bank account or card details, your pin or banking password and they will not ask for proof of identity such as passport, driving licence or pay slips.

Please see the attached copy of the scam email.

Here is a link to the NHS website to find more information:

Kindling Wood

The Village Hall has had to have a large part of the hardwood floor replace. This means that there is now large quantity of floor board wood available that is ideal for kindling.

All the wood is dry and still stored inside the hall in 2 to 3 ft lengths. The wood is available to villagers but needs to be collected from the hall.

Please contact Ron Perry, ronperry58@yahoo,co.uk, for more information and to arrange collection.

Vaccination Scam

Trading Standards is warning the public to be on their guard following reports that fraudsters are sending out fake texts offering a Covid-19 vaccine in an attempt to steal bank details.

The text offers a link to what police call an “extremely convincing” fake NHS website.

Once on the website people are asked to input their bank details to register for a vaccine.

The scam message reads ‘we have identified that you are eligible to apply for your vaccine’ and then prompts you to click on a link for further information or to ‘apply’ for the vaccine.

If you receive a text or email that asks you to click on a link or for you to provide information, such as your name, credit card or bank details, delete it immediately.

Remember, the NHS will never ask for your payment details.

If you think you have been scammed, you can get advice and find out how to report it at What to do if you’ve been scammed – Citizens Advice
